In the current digital era, cyber fraud and online scams are growing more prevalent in India. Cybercriminals are employing every tactic in the book to defraud innocent users of their hard-earned money, from phishing messages and fake job scams to UPI frauds.
Don't panic if you or someone you know has been the victim of cyber fraud, but take quick action. Your chances of getting your money back and avoiding more harm increase with the speed at which you act.
Here is a detailed guide to help you act appropriately as soon as you learn that you have been the victim of cybercrime in India.
Step 1: Don’t Panic – Stay Calm and Alert
Panic or fear are frequently the initial responses to losing money online. But it's crucial to maintain your composure. Your chances of recovering may be lowered if you panic and put off taking the necessary action.
After taking a few deep breaths, write down everything you can recall about the incident, including the website or app used, any dubious links, the amount of money lost, and the time and date of the fraud.
Step 2: Immediately Call the Cyber Crime Helpline – 1930
A dedicated cybercrime hotline, 1930, has been established by the Indian government.
• Dial 1930 from any phone (available in multiple Indian languages including Gujarati).
• The helpline is active 24/7 and is managed by trained cybercrime response teams.
• Provide clear details about the transaction, your mobile number, and your bank account.
The authorities have a good chance of freezing the fraudulent transaction and preventing additional loss if you call within the first few hours.
Step 3: Report the Incident on the National Cyber Crime Portal
After calling 1930, register a complaint online at:
www.cybercrime.gov.in
How to file a complaint:
1. Go to the website.
2. Click on “Report Other Cyber Crimes” or “Report Financial Fraud.”
3. Register and fill out the complaint form with necessary details and documents.
4. Upload proof such as screenshots, chat logs, bank statements, etc.
5. You’ll receive a complaint ID for future tracking.
Note: The website is accessible in Gujarati, Hindi, English, and other Indian languages.
Step 4: Inform Your Bank or Wallet Provider Immediately
Make immediate contact with your credit card issuer, bank, or UPI provider (such as Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm).
• Block your card or UPI account temporarily to prevent further misuse.
• File a written complaint or send an email with transaction details.
• Ask for a chargeback or dispute resolution if the fraud happened via credit card.
As long as the fraud is reported promptly, the RBI's Customer Protection policy now mandates that the majority of banks help victims.
Step 5: File a Police Report (FIR) at Your Nearest Cyber Cell
For serious cases (such as identity theft, harassment, or significant financial losses), go to the local police station or cyber police station that is closest to you and file a formal complaint.
Documents to carry:
• A copy of your online complaint (from cybercrime.gov.in)
• Proof of transaction (SMS, bank statement)
• Your Aadhaar card or valid ID
Tip for Gujarati users: There are specialised cybercrime units in Gujarat's largest cities, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot, where you can receive assistance more quickly.
Step 6: Secure Your Devices and Accounts
Other vulnerabilities are frequently left in the wake of cyber fraud. Follow these steps:
• Change passwords of your email, banking, and shopping accounts.
• Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible.
• Install antivirus software and scan your phone/laptop for malware.
• Remove suspicious apps or browser extensions.
Also check: if loan apps or KYC scams have misused your Aadhaar or PAN information.
Step 7: Alert Friends, Family & Public
It's critical to notify your contacts after resolving your own case to prevent them from falling for the same scam.
• Post a warning message on WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram.
• Report the scam numbers, fake websites, or emails to CERT-IN or TRAI.
• Encourage your family—especially elders—to stay cautious.
Step 8: Track Your Complaint & Follow Up Regularly
After submitting the complaint, don't think your work is finished.
• Use your complaint ID on cybercrime.gov.in to track the status.
• Follow up with your bank if no action is taken within 7 working days.
• Contact your local police station for updates on FIR progress.
The speed at which your complaint is handled can be greatly impacted by persistence.
Bonus Tip: Know Common Types of Cyber Frauds in India
The best defence is awareness. In India, some of the most prevalent scams are as follows:
• UPI frauds – Fake payment links or QR codes.
• Phishing – Emails pretending to be from your bank or government.
• OTP scams – Fraudsters pretending to be customer care.
• Fake job offers – Demanding fees for interviews or placements.
• Loan app frauds – Illegal apps misusing KYC data and harassing users.
Keep yourself informed and always double-check before disclosing personal information or money.
Prevention is Better Than Cure: Protect Yourself
For future safety:
• Never share OTPs, passwords, or card details.
• Don’t click on links from unknown sources.
• Always double-check apps and websites before making payments.
• Use only official bank apps and UPI apps from verified sources (like Google Play Store).
• Educate your parents, kids, and less tech-savvy friends.
Final Thoughts
Although cyber fraud is becoming more prevalent in India, assistance is available. You can increase your chances of getting your money back and holding the criminals accountable by moving quickly, utilising government-backed platforms, and remaining tenacious.
